Special events heighten community awareness of the Foundation and its purpose and goals. The Foundation holds its own events and sometimes participates in other community events. The Author Gala is the Foundation's featured event, with gala proceeds benefitting the Library Endowment Fund. In October 2004, the Author Gala with Frances Mayes, who wrote Under the Tuscan Sun and other works, was part of a month-long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Library Service in Alachua County. Anniversary events also included a Centennial Tea, birthday parties at all the branch libraries and a bookmark contest for children. In April 2006, "An Evening with Alexander McCall Smith," featured the internationally recognized author of The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. In October 2007, the author gala featured Erik
Larson who wrote Isaac's Storm, The Devil in the White City and Thunderstruck. Author Galas
